What to Wear in New York – How Not to Look Like A Tourist
Traveling to a Stylish City
There are certain cities you travel to that you feel pressured to look nice. You want to put in a little more effort and look stylish while traveling to these cities. Those cities include Paris, Milan, Rome and New York.
The images of New York women are sleek and stylish, and when traveling to this great city we don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. If you’re like me, then you wish to look stylish and fit right in no matter what city.
What to wear in New York is something that I was researching before I traveled to this fashion capital. I wanted to look put together and effortlessly stylish. It’s hard to pull off such a look while traveling and sightseeing.
We want to look stylish but also be comfortable. Which can be a difficult thing to balance. Being dressy but not too dressy. Looking sharp but not going over the top.
What to Wear in New York
If you have the cash for taxis or drivers than heels might not be a problem for you. If you’re trekking through the city by foot and subway, best opt for more comfortable footwear.
We often tend to reach for sneakers when traveling but if we swap those out for flats or oxfords, it can completely change the look of an outfit.
I wore this outfit when I was in New York sightseeing. Active travel means I wore black patent pointy toe flats. It was a mid-September and still a little warm. Instead of denim shorts or jeans and I wore a black midi skirt that brought a dressy feel to the outfit.
Instead of a solid top, I added some pattern and fun to the look with a polka dot top that I tucked into the skirt.
I kept my accessories simple with a black waist belt, stylish earrings, sunglasses and a large tote.
Overall, this outfit was comfortable but stylish. It’s not over the top, and it’s sleek enough to look like I’m not spending all day as a tourist sightseeing.
When you’re trying to figure out what to wear in New York and you’re visiting the city in the Fall try to wear something other than denim.
Pack a pair of trousers, skirt or shorts in a lovely print. Since you’re traveling, you most likely will be wearing solid neutrals but remember to pack a fun printed piece to liven up an outfit.
Accessorize but don’t go overboard of course. Pack a few stylish accessories that you can wear over and over with a variety of outfits.
We photographed this outfit at the top of the Empire State Building! The Observation Deck of the Empire State Building was amazing and nothing short of extraordinary! More about that in another travel post.
I hope this has helped you answer the question what to wear in New York!
Stay Stylish,
